About TrueToolCalc

Free, no-signup material calculators for construction and home improvement — built to be checked, not just believed.

What this site is

TrueToolCalc is a collection of free online calculators for common building and renovation jobs: concrete volumes (slabs, columns, footings), gravel, mulch, paint, tile, drywall, room BTU sizing and deck boards. Each tool runs entirely in your browser — no account, no download, nothing to install — and supports both imperial and metric units.

The site exists because material estimating is usually a black box. Many calculators show you a number and nothing else; if the number is wrong, you find out at the supply yard. We show the working behind every answer instead.

Who runs this site

TrueToolCalc is run by Wang Z, an independent developer who builds free web-based tools. The pages show the calculation method and assumptions, with worked examples that let you check the arithmetic. Our current maintenance work uses documented calculation checks and browser checks for the paths being changed; these checks do not establish every past edit or every real-world application. No professional engineering credentials are claimed — these are planning estimates, and the limitations section on each page says exactly where a licensed professional is needed instead.

Who it is for

The calculators are made for DIY homeowners planning a project — ordering ready-mix for a patio slab, paint for a bedroom, boards for a deck — and for contractors and tradespeople who want a quick, transparent cross-check before placing a material order or sanity-checking a supplier's quote.

How our numbers are calculated

Every calculator page publishes the same four things, so you never have to take a result on faith:

Cost-calculator defaults are illustrative budget assumptions. The concrete driveway guide uses the same assumption as its calculator; these figures have not been verified as current national averages. Replace them with quotes for the actual region and scope of work.

How content is produced and checked

Our current review process distinguishes calculation checks from source verification. Calculation checks compare selected inputs with expected arithmetic; browser checks cover affected interactions. Passing those checks does not validate market prices, product coverage or suitability for a particular job. Where a number is a site assumption, it should be labelled as such; named standards and external factual claims need their own supporting references. If you find an error in a formula or a guide, we would much rather hear about it than leave it wrong — see the Contact page for how to reach us.

What this site is not

TrueToolCalc provides estimates for planning and material ordering. It is not engineering advice, and it is not a substitute for local building codes, supplier recommendations or a licensed professional. Verify critical quantities — foundations, load-bearing work, anything structural — with a qualified professional before you build.
